CINCINNATI 2004:
bP review:
FINALLY!!!! After years of watching/listening to bootlegs, dreaming of being at a SP show, it finally happened on November 15, 2004. I had seen the crew a few years earlier during the Ohgr tour, so this wouldn't be the first time I saw them perform. However, to finally hear some of my favorite SP tunes, is like a dream come true. I had been a fan since '96 and never thought I'd see them live (with everything that was going on, I didn't think it'd even be possible). Fortunately that all changed and they were once again touring. When I heard SP was playing in Cincinnati, I got kind of pissed cause I knew it'd be at Bogarts. I've been to that venue numerous times and quite frankly, despise the place. The ventilation sucks, the security crew are a bunch of assholes and the sound is usually bad. I was hoping SP would go to Indianapolis or Louisville, but no luck. Fortunately, the venue didn't cause me much trouble this time around and the music, for the most part, sounded great. I'm not very good at explaining details, so I'm just gonna give off some thoughts. First off, Hexonxonx sounded amazing live. That song put a huge smile on my face. After that song was played, it became one of my new favorites. The "skit" performed during that song was quite interesting and amusing. There's no doubt that SP isn't a fan of George W Bush. Some other songs that were highlights included God's Gift, VX Gas Attack (though the microphone seemed to clip during this song), Deep Down Trauma Hounds and Harsh Stone White. Actually, all songs were great, so no complaints there. The costume Ogre wore during I'mmortal & Protest was very cool. Not sure exactly what it was suppose to be, but looked great. My only gripe, which is just nitpicking, is that the show didn't seem to be a full blown "stage show" as past tours. Now I realize Ogre is much older, so he's not gonna risk injury like he may have in years past. He seemed more laid back and the stage show reminded me of the Ohgr tour. At any rate, it was great to see these guys perform once again, but this time under the SP name. I can't wait to see them again and I definitely await the upcoming DVD release!!

Probably the best concert i've been to in ages, although at the time i was miserable (not the bands fault, i was just having one of "those" days). first thing's first: otto von schirach ROCKED as an opener!!! i would absolutely LOVE to see this man play again in the near future. some people didn't get it, but what the heck... get a sense of humor. his crowd interaction was top-notch. tweaker was ok... i mean, vrenna's drumming rocks. but... i dont know, it felt kinda forced. thats all i can really say on them. now... the lights turned down low, and footage of cliffs and the sea appears on screen. then after a bit, this low rumbling and then radio-ish noise... you could feel the tension and anticipation in the room. then this nasty raw brap ensues, which lead into downsizer (one of my favorites of the show). i cant even begin to describe how intense this film footage was. i could try to describe it, but you'll have to wait and see the dvd if you didnt get to catch them live. ogre was wearing what has been called the "plague doctor" outfit. it basically looks like some sort of hellraiser cenobite outfit mixed with a straight-jacket and a bird monster. through the first few songs, ogre stripped out of this thing and became our standard ogre-covered-in-stage-blood we all know and love. they cranked out song after song and really showed that puppy are back and going strong. this was a tight set and a tight performance. I give it an A+, as it will be one of the highlights of my life, for sure.

This was my first time to see Skinny Puppy live and I was excited. After an awesome set by Otto Von Schirach, Skinny Puppy's show started with a nature film that seemed too long as my anticipation was building as I waited for the band to come out. Finally, cEvin Key, William Morrison and Justin Bennet came on stage and started into Epilogue which ran straight into Downsizer. Still no Ogre. While he was heard he was not seen. Then came I'mmortal and Ogre running on stage at full speed in his bandaged bird-like costume. As he went by me, I felt something cold hit my face, I looked down at my shirt and realized I was hit with stage blood. This wouldn't be the last time blood would splash on me during the evening, a welcome price any fan pays for being at the front of a Skinny Puppy show. I couldn't have asked for a better setlist. After a few songs from The Greater Wrong of the Right and one from The Process they went into a set full of some of the best songs from their long career including God's Gift (Maggot) and VX Gas Attack, two of my all time favorites. Hardset Head had the audience going crazy, there was a massise push from the back when it started. One humorous moment came during Empte when Ogre tried to take off his costume while singing and it got tangled in the mic cord and a roadie had to come out and assist him in getting untangled. Hexonexon was a nice surprise which also featured "George W. Bush" and "Dick Chaney" beheading Ogre. They then each held up four fingers for four more years to which the audience responded by holding up one finger back at them. The encore was Convulsion and Blue Serge. I knew going in other cities on the tour got three songs for the encore, so I was a little disappointed in that, but I won't complain too much. Other than the stage blood which washed off easily another souvenir I got was a piece of police line tape Ogre used during Harsh Stone White which is proudly displayed on a wall in my home. Skinny Puppy has not retured to Pittsburgh since this show, so it holds a special place in my memory. Hardly a day goes by that something doesn't remind me of this one great night.
