Original: Jean Cocteau, 1928 (premiere 1930). As I wrote below, I love monodramas (a play for one character)! The piece depicts a woman's final telephone conversation with her lover, who leaves her to marry another. The monologue depicts her despair, feigning peace, suicide attempts, and emotional breakdown. Add to that the Scanner sound effects, and you have a masterpiece! I've personally listened to it hundreds of times! I'll never get tired of it! I'm looking for the name of the actress who lent her voice to this monodrama. Her acting, or rather, her voice, is amazing! I don't think I've ever heard so much emotion in a human voice at once!

Let me tell you Dostoevsky is not great. He's far, far, FAR better then that! Interesting fact no. 1: Simulated Execution: In 1849, for his participation in a revolutionary discussion group called the Petrashevsky Circle, Dostoevsky was arrested and sentenced to death. Along with other prisoners, he was brought before a firing squad, and at the last minute, a messenger on horseback arrived with a pardon and a commutation of his sentence to four years of hard labor in Siberia. This traumatic experience, lasting only minutes, is considered crucial in shaping his later worldview and the themes of his work ("The Idiot"). It was in "The Idiot" (my favorite book by Dostoyevsky) that he beautifully described his experiences just before his expected death.

I love monodrams! And this is one of the best I've ever seen/heard! This short novel, by Russian standards, is widely considered a pioneering figure in the philosophy of existentialism. It presents the inner monologue of a man rebelling against the rationalism, determinism, and idealism of the era, exposing the fragility of the human psyche and the inability to fully control one's life. The main narrator is the Underground Man—a former official, a loner, and misanthrope who lives in extreme isolation in St. Petersburg. He is one of the most anti-heroic figures in literature: intelligent but full of contradictions, spiteful, suffering, and self-deprecating.

The 1968 film "Whistle and I'll Come to You" directed by Jonathan Miller and starring Michel Hordern, is considered one of the earliest and most terrifying examples of ghost stories. The plot centers on a lonely, eccentric professor who, while on a winter vacation on the English coast, discovers a mysterious whistle carved from bone in an old Templar cemetery. Using the whistle, he unknowingly summons an eerie and ghostly force that begins to terrorize him. The minimalist style, black-and-white photography, and avoidance of special effects create a haunting and evocative atmosphere of dread. The ending of the movie always gives me goosebumps!
